ОН, ОНА, ОНО and ОНИ, or Categories "gender" and "plurality" of the nouns
Nouns can be feminine (OHA), masculine (OH) and neuter (ОНО).
Determine the gender is not so difficult, you just need to know how to write words correctly (their endings).  :)

ОН (masculine)

Nouns of the masculine gender (OH) are words on the consonant or -Й (-ИЙ):
дом, го́род, о́стров, магази́н, флаг, чай, музе́й, ге́ний.
And also the words in , for example, Кремль, календа́рь, рубль, слова́рь, писа́тель and others (these words can be seen here).

There are some words that also belong to the Masculine gender:
па́па, де́душка, дя́дя, мужчи́на, ю́ноша...
These nouns denote males, therefore, refer to the masculine gender (OH).

Ко́ля (Никола́й), Ва́ня (Ива́н), Во́ва (Влади́мир)... - also Masculine gender (ОН).
In Russian, male names may have a diminutive (short) form, in which the endings are or . And so you need to know the full names.

If this is a foreign word, name of the city or island, male names and surnames, then this is the masculine gender - го́род То́кио, о́стров Ка́при, президе́нт Не́ру, писа́тель Гёте, друг Хосе́.
